AIM 4-3-22 explains practice instrument approaches: ATC separation, VFR weather minimums, missed approach authorization, and pilot/controller communication.
Practice instrument approaches can be flown by either an IFR aircraft or a VFR aircraft not on an IFR flight plan. ATC will provide separation when workload permits, but approval isn't guaranteed — controllers may deny or withdraw approval when traffic gets busy.
Key points to remember:
- VFR pilots must still comply with basic VFR weather minimums (14 CFR 91.155) and the see-and-avoid rule (14 CFR 91.113), even if ATC is providing separation.
- When requesting, always say "practice" so the controller knows your status. Controllers will tell VFR aircraft to maintain VFR — if you want IFR rules, you must specifically request and receive an IFR clearance.
- Tell ATC the type of approach and how you'll terminate it (full-stop, touch-and-go, missed, or low approach).
- VFR aircraft are not automatically authorized to fly the missed approach — you must request it and have it approved.
- At non-towered airports, notify the controlling facility shown on the approach chart.
- Controller separation responsibility for VFR aircraft begins at the approach clearance point or upon entering Class B/C airspace or a TRSA, whichever comes first.
During VFR conditions, ATC may apply 500 feet vertical separation between VFR aircraft, or between a VFR and IFR aircraft, in addition to normal IFR minimums.
