AIM 10-1-2 explains how helicopters use Instrument Flight Procedures (IFPs) to operate to heliports and runways in low ceilings/visibility. Helicopters can fly any published IAP they're equipped for, but specific rules apply:
- Conventional (non-Copter) IAPs: You may reduce visibility to one-half the published Category A minima, or ¼ SM / 1200 RVR, whichever is greater — unless the chart says "Visibility Reduction by Helicopters NA." No MDA/DA reduction is ever allowed.
- Speed for visibility reduction: You can fly the final approach up to the highest authorized category speed, but must slow to 90 KIAS or less at the MAP to apply the reduction.
- Copter IAPs: Use published minima — no reductions. Max 90 KIAS unless otherwise charted.
- RNAV (GPS) Copter IAPs: Max 90 KIAS generally, but 70 KIAS on final and missed approach segments unless charted otherwise. Obstacle protection is designed for 70 kts.
- Military RNAV Copter: 90 KIAS throughout.
Key speeds: VMINI (instrument minimum speed), VYI (instrument climb speed), VY (best rate of climb). Some helicopters' VMINI or autopilot go-around VYI exceeds 70 KIAS, making certain RNAV approaches infeasible.
Even at reported minimums, cockpit cutoff angle, lighting, high MDA with low vis, rain, or fogging may prevent acquiring required visual references — always be ready to go missed.
