AIM ¶ 5-4-9 — Procedure Turn
AIM 5-4-9 explains procedure turns and holds-in-lieu of PT: when required, altitude limits, distance, speed, and NoPT rules for instrument approaches.
A procedure turn (PT) is a course reversal maneuver used to align the aircraft inbound on an intermediate or final approach course. Per AIM 5-4-9, the PT or hold-in-lieu-of-PT (HILPT) is mandatory when depicted on the chart unless:
- ATC clears you for a straight-in approach
- The segment is marked "NoPT"
- You receive radar vectors to final
- You're flying a timed approach from a holding fix
Key operational rules:
- The PT altitude is a minimum until established inbound.
- Complete the maneuver within the distance shown in the profile view (normally 10 NM, range 5–15 NM).
- Observe a maximum 200 KIAS from overheading the IAF through the PT.
- The barbed arrow shows the maneuvering side; pilot chooses turn type (45°, racetrack, teardrop, or 80°/260°).
- For a HILPT, fly the depicted direction and don't exceed the published leg length/timing; max holding speeds apply.
- Don't descend below PT altitude until established inbound.
If the clearance is ambiguous (PT vs. straight-in), request clarification from ATC immediately (14 CFR 91.123). The maneuver protects obstacle clearance, so flying it as charted matters.
