Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) are battery-powered beacons designed to automatically activate on crash impact and help search and rescue (SAR) locate downed aircraft. Per 14 CFR 91.207, most general aviation airplanes are required to carry one.
ELTs operate on three frequencies:
- 121.5 MHz and 243.0 MHz — older analog beacons emitting a downward-swept audio tone
- 406 MHz — newer digital beacons that encode owner/aircraft data (and sometimes GPS position) and include a low-power 121.5 MHz homing signal
Since February 1, 2009, the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system no longer monitors 121.5/243.0 MHz. Aircraft with only analog ELTs depend on ATC or overflying aircraft to detect signals. 406 MHz ELTs must be registered with NOAA and allow SAR to respond in minutes instead of hours.
Key operational rules:
- ELTs operate continuously for at least 48 hours once activated
- Test analog ELTs only in the first 5 minutes of the hour, no more than three audible sweeps
- Test 406 MHz ELTs only per manufacturer instructions — no airborne tests
- Monitor 121.5 MHz before engine shutdown to catch inadvertent activations
- If you hear an ELT signal inflight, report position when first/last heard and at maximum strength to ATC
