Ground Altimeter Check: Set the current reported altimeter setting and compare the indicated altitude to known field elevation. If the difference is ±75 feet or more, the altimeter's accuracy is questionable and should be evaluated by a repair station.
Why it matters: Flying from a high-pressure area into a low-pressure area without updating the setting puts you closer to the ground than indicated — "High to Low, Look Out Below." A 1 inHg error equals roughly 1,000 feet of altitude.
Altimeter Setting Procedures:
- Below 18,000 ft MSL: Use the current reported setting from a station along your route within 100 NM.
- When pressure exceeds 31.00 inHg: A NOTAM is issued; aircraft set 31.00 inHg en route. IFR aircraft unable to set above 31.00 must increase ceiling/visibility minimums by 100 ft and 1/4 SM per 1/10 inHg over 31.00.
- At or above 18,000 ft MSL: Set 29.92 inHg (standard). Low pressure may raise the lowest usable flight level (see TBL 7-2-1).
