Flight Instructor Applicability

FAR 61.181 Flight Instructor Applicability

FAR 61.181 sets the scope for flight instructor certificates and ratings under Subpart H, including issuance requirements, conditions, and limitations.

In Plain English

FAR 61.181 is the opening section of Subpart H of Part 61, which governs flight instructor certificates and ratings. Think of it as a roadmap: it tells you what the rest of the subpart covers and who it applies to.

Specifically, this section says Subpart H prescribes:

  • The requirements for issuance of flight instructor certificates and ratings
  • The conditions under which those certificates and ratings are necessary
  • The limitations placed on those certificates and ratings

One important carve-out: flight instructor certificates with a sport pilot rating are not covered here — those are handled separately under Subpart K.

Why it matters operationally: if you're working toward your CFI, CFII, or MEI, every eligibility, training, testing, and privilege rule you'll need to know lives in Subpart H (61.181 through 61.201). Knowing the applicability section helps you find the right rule quickly during training, oral exams, and checkrides — and avoid mixing up sport pilot instructor rules with traditional CFI rules.
