FAR 61.211 — Ground Instructor Applicability
FAR 61.211 sets out the scope of Subpart I, covering when ground instructor certificates and ratings are required and the limits placed on them.
FAR 61.211 is the opening section of Subpart I of Part 61, and it simply tells you what the rest of that subpart is about. It establishes the scope and applicability of the rules covering ground instructors.
Specifically, this subpart prescribes:
- The requirements for issuance of ground instructor certificates and ratings
- The conditions under which those certificates and ratings are necessary
- The limitations placed on those certificates and ratings
Why does this matter operationally? If you plan to provide aeronautical knowledge training on the ground — for example, prepping students for the FAA knowledge test or endorsing them to take it — you need to know which rules apply to you. FAR 61.211 points you to the right place. The detailed privileges, eligibility requirements, and recent experience rules for basic, advanced, and instrument ground instructors all live in the sections that follow this one.
