Sport Pilot Applicability

FAR 61.301 Sport Pilot Applicability

FAR 61.301 explains the purpose of Subpart J and who it applies to: sport pilot applicants, certificate holders, and certain higher-rated pilots.

In Plain English

FAR 61.301 is the opening section of Subpart J, which is the part of Part 61 dedicated to the sport pilot certificate. It tells you two things: what the subpart covers, and who has to follow it.

The subpart sets out the rules for a sport pilot certificate in these areas:

  • Eligibility — who can apply
  • Aeronautical knowledge — required ground knowledge
  • Flight proficiency — required flying skills
  • Aeronautical experience — minimum hours and tasks
  • Endorsements — required instructor sign-offs
  • Privileges and limits — what you can and cannot do as a sport pilot

Logging of flight time and testing are handled by other parts of Part 61, not this subpart.

The subpart applies to anyone applying for or holding a sport pilot certificate, and it also reaches recreational pilot certificate holders and higher when they exercise sport pilot privileges, as spelled out in FAR 61.303.

Why it matters: knowing the scope of Subpart J helps you find the correct rule fast — useful on a checkride and during training when a CFI or DPE asks where a sport-pilot requirement comes from.
