Student Pilot Towered Airspace Training

FAR 61.94 Student Pilot Towered Airspace Training

FAR 61.94 explains the training and endorsements student sport and recreational pilots need to operate solo in Class B, C, D airspace and towered airports.

In Plain English

FAR 61.94 applies to student pilots working toward a sport pilot or recreational pilot certificate who want to fly solo in Class B, C, or D airspace, at an airport in that airspace, or at any airport with an operational control tower. Before such a solo flight, you must receive and log both ground and flight training from an authorized instructor covering:

  • Use of radios, communications, navigation systems, and radar services
  • Operations at towered airports, including three takeoffs and landings to a full stop in the traffic pattern at a towered airport
  • The Part 91 flight rules and ATC clearances that apply in Class B, C, and D airspace
  • Specific training in the exact airspace where solo flight is authorized, completed within the 90 days before the flight
  • Specific training at the exact airport where solo flight is authorized, also within the prior 90 days

Your instructor must then give you a logbook endorsement stating you've received the training and are proficient to fly solo in that specific airspace or at that specific airport. This rule matters because it ensures you can safely communicate, navigate, and follow ATC instructions in busy airspace before going alone.

Regulation Text
14 CFR § 61.94
§ 61.94 Student pilot seeking a sport pilot certificate or a recreational pilot certificate: Operations at airports within, and in airspace located within, Class B, C, and D airspace, or at airports with an operational control tower in other airspace. (a) A student pilot seeking a sport pilot certificate or a recreational pilot certificate who wants to obtain privileges to operate in Class B, C, and D airspace, at an airport located in Class B, C, or D airspace, and to, from, through, or at an airport having an operational control tower, must receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor in the following aeronautical knowledge areas and areas of operation: (1) The use of radios, communications, navigation systems and facilities, and radar services. (2) Operations at airports with an operating control tower, to include three takeoffs and landings to a full stop, with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern, at an airport with an operating control tower. (3) Applicable flight rules of part 91 of this chapter for operations in Class B, C, and D airspace and air traffic control clearances. (4) Ground and flight training for the specific Class B, C, or D airspace for which the solo flight is authorized, if applicable, within the 90-day period preceding the date of the flight in that airspace. The flight training must be received in the specific airspace area for which solo flight is authorized. (5) Ground and flight training for the specific airport located in Class B, C, or D airspace for which the solo flight is authorized, if applicable, within the 90-day period preceding the date of the flight at that airport. The flight and ground training must be received at the specific airport for which solo flight is authorized. (b) The authorized instructor who provides the training specified in paragraph (a) of this section must provide a logbook endorsement that certifies the student has received that training and is proficient to conduct solo flight in that specific airspace or at that specific airport and in those aeronautical knowledge areas and areas of operation specified in this section. Oral Exam Questions a DPE Might Ask
Q1As a student pilot pursuing a sport or recreational certificate, what training do you need before flying solo into Class C airspace?
Per FAR 61.94, I must receive ground and flight training from an authorized instructor on radio use, towered airport operations (including three full-stop takeoffs and landings in the pattern), and the Part 91 rules for Class B, C, and D airspace, plus specific training in that Class C airspace within the previous 90 days.
Q2How recent must the airspace-specific training be, and what endorsement is required?
FAR 61.94 requires that ground and flight training in the specific Class B, C, or D airspace or at the specific towered airport be completed within the 90-day period preceding the solo flight, and the authorized instructor must provide a logbook endorsement certifying proficiency for that specific airspace or airport.
Q3Does FAR 61.94 apply if you only want to operate at a towered airport that isn't inside Class B, C, or D airspace?
Yes. FAR 61.94 covers operations to, from, through, or at any airport with an operational control tower, even in other airspace, so the training and endorsement requirements still apply.
