VFR Waypoints

Learn what those magenta flags on your sectional really mean. VFR waypoints, VP identifiers, GPS use, and ATC reporting — explained for student pilots.

Those little magenta four-point stars on your sectional are VFR waypoints. They're GPS-friendly points the FAA put on the chart to help VFR pilots stay out of Class B/C airspace and report position to ATC.

The name always starts with "VP" plus three more characters — like VPABC. Type that into your GPS and it'll navigate you there. On the radio, just say "over VPABC."

Two rules to remember: they're VFR only (never file them IFR), and they don't excuse you from looking outside or staying clear of controlled airspace.

VFR waypoints provide VFR pilots with a supplementary tool to assist with position awareness while navigating visually in aircraft equipped with area navigation (RNAV) receivers. VFR waypoints are intended primarily as a navigational aid for pilots flying under visual flight rules and are not authorized for use on IFR flight plans.

VFR waypoints were developed to help VFR pilots avoid airspace incursions, particularly into Class B and Class C areas and prohibited and restricted airspace. They are placed at strategic locations such as VFR corridors, transition routes, terrain features, prominent landmarks, and reporting points commonly used by ATC when working VFR traffic.

Chart Symbology

On VFR sectional charts, terminal area charts (TACs), and helicopter route charts, VFR waypoints are depicted using one of two symbols:

  • Stand-alone VFR waypoint — a four-point magenta star (sometimes called a "magenta flag" by pilots). These are charted at locations where no other navigational facility exists.
  • Collocated VFR waypoint — a magenta flag symbol superimposed on a VFR checkpoint or other charted feature, indicating the location is both a traditional visual checkpoint and a programmable RNAV waypoint.

In both cases, the waypoint name appears in a box adjacent to the symbol, and the name always begins with the letters "VP" followed by three additional alphanumeric characters (for example, VPABC, VPKLM). The five-character identifier is the name pilots enter into a GPS or RNAV receiver to navigate to or from the waypoint. Latitude and longitude coordinates for each VFR waypoint are published in the Chart Supplement (formerly Airport/Facility Directory).

Using VFR Waypoints

When used in conjunction with a GPS, VFR waypoints provide accurate course and distance information that pilots can cross-reference against visual landmarks. Typical uses include:

  • Navigating along a VFR corridor through Class B airspace.
  • Identifying a position from which to call approach control before entering Class C or Class B airspace.
  • Reporting position when requested by ATC ("Cessna 12345 is over VPABC, three thousand five hundred").
  • Marking an entry or exit point for a published VFR transition route or flyway.

The waypoint name itself — VPXXX — is what pilots use on the radio when communicating with ATC, and ATC controllers' charts and references include the same identifiers.

Operational Rules and Limitations

Several important restrictions apply to VFR waypoint use:

  • VFR waypoints shall not be used to plan flights under IFR. They are not in the IFR navigation database and are not assessed for IFR obstruction clearance.
  • VFR waypoints may not be used as a substitute for required ground-based navigational facilities on an IFR flight plan or clearance.
  • A VFR waypoint shall not be filed as an alternate, departure, or destination point on an IFR flight plan.
  • When filing a VFR flight plan, the five-character identifier may be used as a fix in the route of flight in lieu of latitude/longitude or a named visual checkpoint.
  • Pilots should still maintain see-and-avoid vigilance and continue to use sectional charts for terrain, obstruction, and airspace awareness — the waypoint is a navigation aid, not a clearance to enter controlled airspace.

Programming and Pronunciation

A VFR waypoint identifier is loaded into the GPS exactly as charted. For example, to navigate direct to VPABC, the pilot enters "VPABC" in the direct-to function. On the radio, however, controllers and pilots typically pronounce each letter phonetically — "Victor Papa Alpha Bravo Charlie" — to avoid confusion, although the identifier may also be referenced by the spoken name of the underlying landmark when one exists.

Example

A pilot departing a satellite airport beneath the Bravo shelf plans a route to transition through a Class B VFR corridor. The corridor entry is depicted on the TAC as a magenta four-point star labeled VPXYZ. The pilot loads VPXYZ into the GPS direct-to, follows the magenta course line while maintaining visual reference to the river running through the corridor, and reports "over VPXYZ at two thousand five hundred" on the appropriate frequency. The waypoint provides precise positional confirmation while the pilot continues to navigate primarily by outside reference, as required under VFR.

Summary
