Runway Visual Range (RVR) is an instrument-derived value, in feet, that tells pilots the horizontal distance they can expect to see down the runway. It's critical for low-visibility approaches because RVR—not prevailing visibility—usually controls whether you can legally begin or continue an approach.
Two systems exist in the NAS:
- Taskers: older transmissometer-based units. A projector and receiver sit on 14-foot towers 250 feet apart; obscurations (fog, rain, snow, smoke) reduce received light, which is converted to an RVR value.
- New Generation RVR: forward scatter meters on 14-foot frangible fiberglass poles that measure scattered infrared light, combined with a runway light intensity monitor (RLIM) and ambient light sensor (ALS).
The system factors in runway edge or centerline light step settings and day/night conditions to compute RVR. Values update about every minute and are issued by ATC.
Approach category minimums (TBL 7-1-7):
- Nonprecision: 2,400 ft
- Category I: 1,800 ft (1,400 with special equipment)
- Category II: 1,000 ft
- Category IIIa: 700 ft
- Category IIIb: 150 ft
- Category IIIc: 0 ft
RVR is reported in METARs when prevailing visibility is under 1 mile or RVR is 6,000 ft or less. Pilots remain responsible for complying with the minimums in their applicable CFRs or ops specs.
