FAR 67.1 — Medical Certificate Applicability
FAR 67.1 establishes the scope of Part 67, covering medical standards and certification procedures for airmen to obtain and maintain medical certificates.
FAR 67.1 is the opening section of Part 67, which sets out the medical standards and certification procedures the FAA uses for airmen. In plain terms, this section tells you what Part 67 is about and who it applies to.
Part 67 covers two main things:
- Issuing medical certificates — the standards you must meet to be granted a first-, second-, or third-class medical.
- Remaining eligible — the standards you must continue to meet to keep your medical valid.
Why it matters operationally: As a pilot, your ability to legally exercise the privileges of most certificates depends on holding a valid medical (or BasicMed where applicable). Part 67 is the rulebook the Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) uses when deciding whether to issue or deny your certificate, and it's also the standard you must keep meeting between exams. If a condition develops that makes you no longer eligible under Part 67, you must stop exercising the privileges that require that medical.
