AIM ¶ 4-1-6 — Pilot ATC Facility Visits
AIM 4-1-6 explains how pilots can request visits to air traffic control facilities, including advance notice, group details, and approval considerations.
AIM 4-1-6 encourages pilots to take part in pilot/ATC outreach activities like visiting local air traffic facilities (towers, TRACONs, ARTCCs). Seeing controllers work firsthand is one of the best ways to understand the system you operate in every flight — but it's not a guaranteed right.
Because of security and workload concerns, visit requests may be denied. To improve your chances:
- Submit requests as early as possible through the air traffic facility itself.
- Provide the facility with:
- Number of persons in your group
- Time and date of the proposed visit
- Primary interest of the group (e.g., student pilots learning approach control)
- Wait for the facility to provide further instructions if approved.
This is a recommended practice, not a regulatory requirement. The underlying authority for approval decisions is FAA Order 1600.69, FAA Facility Security Management Program. For student pilots, a facility tour is an excellent way to demystify ATC services, build comfort with radio communications, and prepare for checkride scenarios involving ATC interaction.
