Precipitation static (P-static) happens when your aircraft flies through uncharged particles — rain, snow, fog, sleet, hail, volcanic ash, or dust — and accumulates a negative charge on the skin. Once the charge is high enough, the aircraft enters corona discharge, releasing static off extremities like wingtips, stabilizers, antennas, and prop tips. You hear this as noise in your headset and it can wreck avionics performance.
Common symptoms reported by pilots include:
- Complete loss of VHF communications
- Magnetic compass errors up to 30%
- High-pitched squeal or motor-boat sound on audio
- Loss of all avionics in clouds
- Erratic instrument readouts and weak transmissions
- St. Elmo's Fire on the windshield
The fix is static dischargers (fine metal points, carbon rods, or wicks) installed on trailing wing and tail surfaces of a properly bonded airframe. They give accumulated charge an easy, quiet path to bleed off, reducing static noise by about 50 dB. Dischargers require periodic maintenance, and a pilot who recognizes P-static symptoms early is a key part of the system.
