AIM 7-6-16 warns pilots about the hazards of flying near exhaust plumes from smokestacks, cooling towers, and industrial facilities. These plumes — visible or invisible — release hot, unstable gases that can disturb the air and damage aircraft.
Key hazards include:
- Turbulence and vertical shear from high-temperature effluent
- Reduced visibility in smoke or condensation
- Oxygen depletion and exposure to gaseous oxides
- Engine particulate contamination and possible engine damage/failure
- Icing and potential airframe damage or aircraft upset
Turbulent effects can extend over 1,000 feet above the top of the stack, and are worst in calm, cold, stable air. Any crosswind helps dissipate the plume. Tower size is not a reliable indicator of severity — heat, plume size, ambient temperature, and wind matter more. Smaller aircraft feel effects at higher altitudes than heavier aircraft.
