FAR 21.131 — Production Certificates Applicability
FAR 21.131 sets the applicability of Subpart G, covering procedures for issuing production certificates and rules for certificate holders.
FAR 21.131 is the applicability section for Subpart G of Part 21, which deals with production certificates issued by the FAA. While this rule isn't something a typical student pilot will use day-to-day, it's important to understand because it sets the legal foundation for how aircraft and aircraft parts are mass-produced under FAA oversight.
Specifically, this subpart prescribes:
- Procedural requirements for issuing production certificates — the process a manufacturer must follow to be authorized to produce a type-certificated product.
- Rules governing holders of those production certificates — the ongoing obligations a manufacturer must meet once they hold a certificate.
Operationally, this matters because every certified airplane you fly was built under a production certificate framework. It ensures that aircraft coming off the assembly line conform to their approved type design, supporting airworthiness and safety across the fleet.
