Medical Certificate Return

FAR 67.415 Medical Certificate Return

FAR 67.415 requires pilots to return any suspended or revoked medical certificate to the FAA Administrator upon request. Learn what it means for you.

In Plain English

FAR 67.415 is a short but important rule that closes the loop on enforcement actions against your medical certificate. If the FAA suspends or revokes any medical certificate issued under Part 67 — first, second, or third class — you must return the physical certificate to the Administrator when asked.

Key points to know:

  • Applies to any class of medical certificate issued under Part 67.
  • Triggered by either a suspension (temporary) or a revocation (permanent loss).
  • Return is required upon the Administrator's request — you don't have to mail it in unsolicited, but you must comply when asked.

Why it matters operationally: a suspended or revoked medical means you are not legally qualified to exercise pilot privileges that require it. Holding onto the document could create confusion or imply continued authority you no longer have. Returning it on request is part of staying in good standing with the FAA and avoiding additional enforcement action for non-compliance.

Regulation Text
14 CFR § 67.415
§ 67.415 Return of medical certificate after suspension or revocation. The holder of any medical certificate issued under this part that is suspended or revoked shall, upon the Administrator's request, return it to the Administrator.
Oral Exam Questions a DPE Might Ask
Q1If your medical certificate is suspended, are you required to send it back to the FAA?
Yes — under FAR 67.415, the holder of a suspended or revoked medical certificate must return it to the Administrator upon request.
Q2Does FAR 67.415 apply only to first-class medicals, or to all classes?
FAR 67.415 applies to any medical certificate issued under Part 67, which includes first-, second-, and third-class medical certificates.
Q3Do you have to return your medical certificate immediately upon revocation, or only when the FAA asks?
Per FAR 67.415, the certificate must be returned upon the Administrator's request, so the duty to surrender it is triggered by an FAA request following the suspension or revocation.
