National Driver Register Consent

FAR 67.7 National Driver Register Consent

FAR 67.7 requires medical certificate applicants to consent to FAA access to their National Driver Register records. Learn what it means for pilots.

In Plain English

FAR 67.7 requires every applicant for an FAA medical certificate to sign an express consent form allowing the FAA Administrator to access the applicant's records in the National Driver Register (NDR). Here's how it works:

  • When you apply for a medical certificate under Part 67, you authorize the Administrator to request your driving record information from the chief driver licensing official of any state the Administrator selects.
  • The information transmitted comes from the National Driver Register, a federal database that tracks serious driving offenses (such as DUI/DWI convictions and license suspensions).
  • If the FAA receives information from the NDR, it must make that information available to you on request so you can review and submit written comments on it.

Why it matters operationally: Your driving history is directly relevant to medical certification because alcohol- and drug-related motor vehicle actions can indicate substance issues that affect aeromedical fitness. Refusing to sign the consent means you cannot be issued a medical certificate, which means you cannot legally exercise pilot privileges requiring one.

The Administrator shall make information received from the National Driver Register, if any, available on request to the person for review and written comment.
