Recurrent Training

FAR 91.1107 Recurrent Training

FAR 91.1107 requires fractional ownership program managers to provide recurrent ground and flight training to keep crewmembers proficient in their aircraft.

In Plain English

FAR 91.1107 sets the recurrent training rules for crewmembers in fractional ownership programs (Subpart K). The program manager is responsible for making sure every crewmember stays adequately trained and currently proficient for both the type of aircraft and the crewmember position they fly.

The rule has three parts:

  • Program manager responsibility (a): Ensure each crewmember receives recurrent training and remains proficient.
  • Recurrent ground training (b): Must include, at a minimum:
    • A quiz or review to verify the crewmember's knowledge of the aircraft and position.
    • Instruction as needed in the subjects from initial ground training, including low-altitude windshear, ground icing operations (per §§ 91.1097 and 91.1101), and emergency training.
  • Recurrent flight training (c): Pilots must complete flight training on the maneuvers and procedures required by Subpart K. However, satisfactory completion of the § 91.1065 competency check within the preceding 12 months may be substituted for recurrent flight training.

This matters operationally because it ensures fractional crews don't get rusty — recurrent cycles catch knowledge gaps and keep emergency procedures sharp.

Regulation Text
14 CFR § 91.1107
§ 91.1107 Recurrent training. (a) Each program manager must ensure that each crewmember receives recurrent training and is adequately trained and currently proficient for the type aircraft and crewmember position involved. (b) Recurrent ground training for crewmembers must include at least the following: (1) A quiz or other review to determine the crewmember's knowledge of the aircraft and crewmember position involved. (2) Instruction as necessary in the subjects required for initial ground training by this subpart, as appropriate, including low-altitude windshear training and training on operating during ground icing conditions, as prescribed in § 91.1097 and described in § 91.1101, and emergency training. (c) Recurrent flight training for pilots must include, at least, flight training in the maneuvers or procedures in this subpart, except that satisfactory completion of the check required by § 91.1065 within the preceding 12 months may be substituted for recurrent flight training.
Oral Exam Questions a DPE Might Ask
Q1Who is responsible for ensuring crewmembers in a fractional ownership program receive recurrent training?
Per FAR 91.1107(a), the program manager must ensure each crewmember receives recurrent training and is adequately trained and currently proficient for the type aircraft and crewmember position involved.
Q2What subjects must be covered in recurrent ground training under FAR 91.1107?
FAR 91.1107(b) requires a quiz or review of the crewmember's knowledge plus instruction as necessary in initial ground training subjects, including low-altitude windshear training, ground icing operations training, and emergency training.
Q3Can a pilot substitute anything for the recurrent flight training required by FAR 91.1107?
Yes — under FAR 91.1107(c), satisfactory completion of the § 91.1065 check within the preceding 12 months may be substituted for recurrent flight training.
