Class E Airport Operations

FAR 91.127 Class E Airport Operations

FAR 91.127 covers operations on or near airports in Class E airspace, including traffic patterns, tower communications, and lost-comm procedures.

In Plain English

FAR 91.127 sets the rules for flying on or near an airport in Class E airspace. Unless ATC or Part 93 says otherwise, you must follow the same operating requirements as Class G airports under § 91.126 — meaning standard left traffic for airplanes (right traffic if indicated), and proper direction of turns for helicopters and gliders.

Key requirements:

  • Comply with § 91.126 for traffic patterns and direction of turns.
  • Follow any Part 93 traffic patterns specifically established for that airport.
  • At airports with an operational control tower, you must establish two-way radio communications with the tower before reaching 4 NM from the airport and up to and including 2,500 feet AGL, and maintain them while operating to, from, through, or on the airport.

If your radio fails in flight under VFR, you may still land if weather is at or above basic VFR minimums, you maintain visual contact with the tower, and you receive a light-gun clearance to land. Under IFR, lost comm requires you to follow § 91.185. This rule matters because Class E surface areas often surround towered fields, and busting the comm requirement is a common checkride and enforcement issue.

Regulation Text
14 CFR § 91.127
§ 91.127 Operating on or in the vicinity of an airport in Class E airspace. (a) Unless otherwise required by part 93 of this chapter or unless otherwise authorized or required by the ATC facility having jurisdiction over the Class E airspace area, each person operating an aircraft on or in the vicinity of an airport in a Class E airspace area must comply with the requirements of § 91.126. (b)Each pilot of an aircraft must comply with any traffic patterns established for that airport in part 93 of this chapter. (c)Unless otherwise authorized or required by ATC, no person may operate an aircraft to, from, through, or on an airport having an operational control tower unless two-way radio communications are maintained between that aircraft and the control tower. Communications must be established prior to 4 nautical miles from the airport, up to and including 2,500 feet AGL. However, if the aircraft radio fails in flight, the pilot in command may operate that aircraft and land if weather conditions are at or above basic VFR weather minimums, visual contact with the tower is maintained, and a clearance to land is received. If the aircraft radio fails while in flight under IFR, the pilot must comply with § 91.185. [Docket 24458, 56 FR 65658, Dec. 17, 1991, as amended by Amdt. 91-239, 59 FR 11693, Mar. 11, 1994]
Oral Exam Questions a DPE Might Ask
Q1When operating to a towered airport in Class E airspace, when must you establish two-way radio communications with the tower?
Per FAR 91.127(c), two-way radio communications must be established prior to 4 nautical miles from the airport, up to and including 2,500 feet AGL, and maintained while operating to, from, through, or on the airport.
Q2If your radio fails in flight while VFR inbound to a towered airport in Class E airspace, can you still land?
Yes. Under FAR 91.127(c), you may land if weather is at or above basic VFR minimums, you maintain visual contact with the tower, and you receive a clearance to land (typically via light-gun signals).
Q3What traffic pattern rules apply at a non-towered airport located in Class E airspace?
FAR 91.127(a) requires you to comply with the requirements of § 91.126, meaning standard left-hand traffic for airplanes unless right traffic is indicated, plus any traffic patterns established under Part 93.
