MU-2B Training Applicability

FAR 91.1701 MU-2B Training Applicability

FAR 91.1701 requires all Mitsubishi MU-2B training to follow an approved program. Learn who it applies to and how it supplements Parts 61, 91, and 135.

In Plain English

FAR 91.1701 establishes when and to whom the special MU-2B training rules apply. The Mitsubishi MU-2B is a high-performance turboprop with a unique accident history, so the FAA created a dedicated training subpart for it.

Key points:

  • Effective date: On and after November 7, 2016, all training conducted in an MU-2B must follow an approved MU-2B training program that meets the standards of this subpart.
  • Who must comply: Anyone who operates an MU-2B series airplane, including:
    • The pilot in command (PIC)
    • The second-in-command (SIC)
    • Any other person manipulating the controls while supervised by a PIC
  • Instructors included: The subpart also applies to anyone who provides pilot training in the MU-2B.
  • In addition to other rules: These requirements are in addition to the requirements of Parts 61, 91, and 135 — they do not replace them.

Operationally, this means you cannot legally fly or train in an MU-2B using a generic type-specific syllabus; the training must come from an FAA-approved MU-2B program.

Oral Exam Questions a DPE Might Ask
Q1Who is required to comply with the MU-2B training requirements in Subpart N?
Per FAR 91.1701, the subpart applies to anyone who operates an MU-2B — including the PIC, SIC, and any person manipulating the controls under PIC supervision — as well as anyone who provides pilot training in the airplane.
Q2Do the MU-2B training rules replace the training requirements of Parts 61, 91, or 135?
No. FAR 91.1701(c) states that these requirements are in addition to the requirements of Parts 61, 91, and 135, not a substitute for them.
Q3Since when has an FAA-approved training program been required for all MU-2B training?
FAR 91.1701(a) requires that on and after November 7, 2016, all training conducted in an MU-2B must follow an approved MU-2B training program meeting the standards of Subpart N.
