FAR 91.1711 — MU-2B Aeronautical Experience
FAR 91.1711 sets minimum aeronautical experience to act as PIC of a Mitsubishi MU-2B: ratings required and 100 hours multi-engine PIC time.
FAR 91.1711 establishes the minimum aeronautical experience a pilot must have before acting as pilot in command (PIC) of a Mitsubishi MU-2B series airplane. The MU-2B has a unique handling profile and accident history, so the FAA requires baseline qualifications beyond a typical multi-engine checkout.
To act as PIC of an MU-2B, you must hold:
- An airplane category rating, and
- A multi-engine land class rating.
In addition, you must have logged at least:
- 100 flight hours of PIC time in multi-engine airplanes.
Why it matters operationally: this rule is a gatekeeper. Even a fully type-rated pilot cannot legally fly the MU-2B as PIC without first building 100 hours of multi-engine PIC experience. It works alongside the special MU-2B training program in Subpart N to ensure pilots have both the certificates and the real-world multi-engine experience before commanding this airplane.
