FAR 91.1713 — MU-2B Instructor Requirements
FAR 91.1713 sets instructor, examiner, and check airman requirements for the Mitsubishi MU-2B — hours, currency, and training prerequisites explained.
FAR 91.1713 lays out who is qualified to instruct, check, or evaluate pilots in the Mitsubishi MU-2B — a turboprop with a special FAA training rule because of its unique handling characteristics.
To give flight instruction or a flight review in the MU-2B, a CFI must:
- Complete the MU-2B pilot training and documentation under § 91.1705
- Meet currency under § 91.1715(a) and (c)
- Hold at least 2,000 hours PIC total and 800 hours PIC multiengine
- Have either 300 PIC hours in the MU-2B (50 in the past 12 months), or 100 PIC hours in the MU-2B (25 in the past 12 months) plus 300 hours instructing in an approved MU-2B simulator or FTD (25 in the past 12 months)
Instructors providing ground or simulator training must also meet § 91.1705, currency under § 91.1715(c), the same 2,000/800 hour totals, and 50 hours of MU-2B PIC or sim/FTD instruction in the last 12 months.
For checking and evaluation, DPEs, training center evaluators, and check airmen must complete § 91.1705 training. When checking in the actual airplane, they need 100 hours PIC in the MU-2B and must maintain currency under § 91.1715. This rule matters because it ensures only highly experienced, current instructors and evaluators sign off MU-2B pilots.
