FAR 23.1459 sets the installation and design standards for flight data recorders (FDRs) in Part 23 airplanes when an FDR is required by the operating rules. The goal is simple: make sure the recorder captures accurate data, survives a crash, and can be found afterward.
Key installation requirements:
- Data sources for airspeed, altitude, and heading must meet the aircraft-level system requirements of § 23.2500.
- The vertical acceleration sensor must be rigidly mounted near the CG (within 25% of the mean aerodynamic chord).
- The recorder must draw electrical power from the most reliable bus without compromising essential loads, and stay powered as long as practical.
- A preflight test means (aural or visual) must verify the recorder is working.
- An automatic stop must disable any erasure feature within 10 minutes of crash impact.
- A single electrical failure can't knock out both the FDR and CVR.
The record container must be bright orange or yellow, carry reflective tape, mount an underwater locator when required, and be located as far aft as practical to survive impact and fire. A correlation check between recorder data and the pilot's instruments is also required across the full operating range.
