What keeps a registered aircraft legal to fly
Registration status and airworthiness are separate questions: an aircraft can be currently registered and still be out of annual. These are the recurring intervals that decide the second question.
- Annual and 100-hour inspections (§91.409)The 12-calendar-month annual, and when the 100-hour inspection is additionally required.
- Altimeter and static system tests (§91.411)The 24-calendar-month altimeter, static system, and altitude reporting test for IFR.
- Transponder recertification (§91.413)The 24-calendar-month ATC transponder test and inspection.
- ELT inspection (§91.207)The 12-calendar-month emergency locator transmitter inspection, plus the exceptions.
- VOR equipment check (§91.171)The VOR accuracy check within the preceding 30 days required before IFR flight.
